The cockroach is one of the most disliked household pests. These bugs can be found almost everywhere, from city apartments to country homes. When cockroaches move inside, they quickly become a big problem. They’re hard to spot at first, but once they’re around, they can make your kitchen and bathroom look dirty, leave droppings in your food, and give off a yucky smell that sticks to everything.
Even though cockroaches might seem like they’re only trouble, they do play a role in nature. Outdoors, they help break down old leaves and dead plants so that fresh ones can grow. They keep the environment clean by eating things that are decomposing. That’s helpful outside, but nobody wants them inside their home.
Facts about Cockroaches
The three most common species found in Tucson, Arizona are the American Roach (also known as the Sewer Roach or Waterbug), German Roach, and Oriental Roach. The American variety is the largest and most common in our area, often growing up to two inches long. Locals usually call them sewer roaches or waterbugs. While many of these bugs have wings, certain types like the Oriental do not fly.
Roaches can range in color from light brown to oily black and vary in size from about ¼ inch to a full two inches, depending on their kind. These pests are nocturnal, preferring to hide in dark, moist, and undisturbed spots that are close to food and water. This is why they’re usually found in kitchens and bathrooms, where conditions are ideal for breeding. They move around mostly at night to feed and will scurry away when you turn the lights on.
Roaches are most active when temperatures reach 84 degrees or higher. As Tucson warms up in the spring and stays hot through early fall, sightings and activity remain high. Heavy monsoon rains can force these insects out of the sewer system, making them even more visible indoors.

How do I get rid of roaches?
Cockroaches are very adaptable and cannot be totally eradicated. However, the best way to prevent roaches is to make sure all entry points on the house are sealed, food is locked and stored away, and to treat it directly by locating the nesting areas. Place screens over vents and pipes that lead inside the house, and check the house on a regular basis for any signs of an infestation.
To exterminate roaches it is important to use a professional pest control company that can properly identify the cockroach species, knows how they work, where they hide and how to eliminate them from your home or business. Exterminators are licensed to use stronger chemicals and to apply chemicals more widely, and they can do so while keeping your family safe.
