Mosquito: The world’s deadliest animal isn’t a shark, hippo, or even one of us! Learn why mosquitoes are considered the world’s deadliest creature.
What are Mosquitoes?
Mosquitoes are very small, 6 legged insects, that have a long mouth called a proboscis used to puncture and suck the blood out of their host. Mosquitoes are hard to spot due to their small size and are most active at night.
Many people believe that mosquitoes only eat blood. In fact mosquitoes eat plant nectar, female mosquitoes are the only ones who eat blood and its only to help produce their eggs. After she obtains a blood meal, the female mosquito lays the eggs directly on or near water. The eggs can survive dry conditions for a few months.
Are Mosquitoes more attracted to some people more than others?
Have you ever stood next to a friend or family member on a nice summer evening, start to feel itchy, and realize you have been bitten by a mosquito(es) several times! You than look to your friend or family member, in which they shrug their shoulders and state they have no bites. Well, you are not alone!
Scientists have found there are some factors that play a role to why some people are bitten more often that other. Some factors are blood type, amounts of carbon dioxide emitted from a persons breath, exercise, skin bacteria, beer, pregnancy, clothing color, and unfortunately genetics.
Some things you just can’t change, however there are things you can do reduce your chances of being bit, such as consulting with a trained experts at Conquistador Pest Control and get information about how to manage their habitats and reduce the number of mosquitoes on the property.
Are Mosquitoes really the deadliest creature on the planet?
What would you claim to be the world’s most dangerous and deadly animal? A great white shark? Which is 10.5 ft long, with teeth averaging 3 inches! Or would you say a hippopotamus which is estimated to kill an average of 500 people per year in Africa. You may be shocked, it is actually something much smaller and not so ferocious.
According to the WHO (The World Health Organization) the worlds deadliest creature goes to the mosquito, killing roughly 725,000 people annually. This is due to vector-borne diseases that are transmitted by mosquitoes.
Diseases such as malaria, dengue, schistosomiasis, human African trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis and onchocerciasis. Mosquitoes are also considered very dangerous due to their adaptability; mosquitoes are known to adapt to almost any new environment.
Mosquitoes can also reproduce quickly; one female mosquito can produce between 50 to 500 eggs. Does this mean every mosquito that bites you can kill? No, many people are bitten with no side effects other than an itchy bump. The best way to avoid any mosquito-borne disease is to prevent the bites from even happening.
