What are Mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes are very small, 6 legged insects, that have a long mouth called a proboscis used to puncture and suck the blood out of their host. Mosquitoes are hard to spot due to their small size and are most active at night.

Many people believe that mosquitoes only eat blood. In fact mosquitoes eat plant nectar, female mosquitoes are the only ones who eat blood and its only to help produce their eggs. After she obtains a blood meal, the female mosquito lays the eggs directly on or near water. The eggs can survive dry conditions for a few months.

Mosquitoes are also considered very dangerous due to their adaptability; mosquitoes are known to adapt to almost any new environment.

Mosquitoes can also reproduce quickly; one female mosquito can produce between 50 to 500 eggs. Does this mean every mosquito that bites you can kill? Mosquito prevention starts at home, by removing standing water (even as small as outside pet water bowls), have a fan running outdoors during events. Avoid outdoors during the evening if possible, if you do go outside wear repellent and long sleeves.
