mosquito-free yard

Your Mosquito-Free Yard

Bill and Nancy sat under their new gazebo, eager to enjoy their freshly renovated backyard. Before they could even comment on this dream come true, Bill swatted his arm. Nancy noticed a red welt on her leg. They looked at each other in disbelief: mosquitoes! They just spent a lot of money creating their dream oasis. This is not right. They deserve a mosquito-free yard.

Fortunately, Conquistador Pest & Termite, a leading pest control company in Tucson, recently introduced a US-EPA registered mosquito trap that provides a beautiful solution to Bill and Nancy’s dilemma. With a mosquito trap, you no longer worry about mosquito bites and the diseases they may transmit. You can relax and  enjoy your mosquito-free yard.

How the mosquito trap works

The mosquito trap attracts the female mosquito to the smell of water in the trap. As she lays eggs in it, she becomes contaminated by larvicide. Then she finds another site to lay eggs, spreading the larvicide there as well. Thus, the adult mosquito and its offspring are killed, both inside the trap and in surrounding areas.

This video demonstrates how the trap works.

Reduce Mosquito-Borne Disease

A mosquito-free yard is important not only for the comfort of your family and guests, but also for their health and safety. According to the Arizona Department of Health Services,  Culex mosquitoes in Arizona can carry diseases such as West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis virus. The Aedes aegypti mosquitoes have the potential to spread diseases including chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, and Zika virus, although these have not yet occurred in Arizona.

What About COVID-19?

While some viruses can be transmitted by mosquitoes, rest assured that there is no evidence to suggest that the new coronavirus can be. According to the World Health Organization,

“The new coronavirus is a respiratory virus which spreads primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose. The new coronavirus CANNOT be transmitted through mosquito bites.”

Protect Your Pets

It is important to note that humans are not the only ones who can be infected by mosquitoes. The primary concern for dogs is heartworm. Instances of West Nile and other viruses in dogs are very rare. Cats may also get heartworms if bitten by an infected mosquito, although they are not as susceptible as dogs.

If you have not yet achieved a mosquito-free yard, be sure to use only pet-safe mosquito repellent.  Talk to your veterinarian about how to best protect your furry friends.

Other Ways to Prevent Mosquitoes

While a mosquito trap is the most efficient way to ensure a mosquito-free yard, other preliminary measures include wearing long sleeves and pants and using repellent. According to the CDC, DEET and Picaridin are the most effective ingredients to look for.

Additionally, consider the use of fans on decks and patios. Since mosquitoes are weak fliers, wind currents from fans deter them from coming within biting range.

“I can use my backyard again after 15 years. I haven’t had one mosquito bite since I got the trap. Before I was open season for mosquitoes.”
