“I love weeds in my yard,” said NO ONE EVER. Ugly and detrimental to landscaping, weeds are the bane of a homeowner’s existence. But there is another reason weeds need to be controlled that people don’t often consider: they provide harbor for other unwanted pests. Unfortunately, bugs and weeds go together.
You could say that bugs and weeds go together like peanut butter and jelly. Where there are weeds, there are bugs. Why? In Tucson, many creatures are seeking shelter from the Arizona sun. Weeds provide all the conditions they need to thrive: shade, cooler temperatures, food, and a place to hide. Scorpions, spiders, snakes, and rodents are are just a few of the pests that find safe harbor in weeds.
Any type of pest might be attracted to weeds, but Arizonans should be particularly concerned about the following:
Weeds provide harbor for pests in several essential ways
- Food – weed seeds provide essential nutrition
- Water – water can be found on inside weed stems and leaves, or on top from rain and condensation
- Cover – lack of visibility provides protection from predators (According to the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, cotton rats construct little tunnels or runways in grasses and weeds where they can forage in safety.
