Bugs and Weeds Go Together

  • Ken Fredrick
  • Pest Control, Weed Maintenance
  • February 17, 2020
“I love weeds in my yard,” said NO ONE EVER. Ugly and detrimental to landscaping, weeds are the bane of a homeowner’s existence. But there is another reason weeds need to be controlled that people don’t often consider: they provide harbor for other unwanted pests. Unfortunately, bugs and weeds go together.

WHY DO BUGS AND WEEDS GO TOGETHER?

You could say that bugs and weeds go together like peanut butter and jelly. Where there are weeds, there are bugs. Why? In Tucson, many creatures are seeking shelter from the Arizona sun. Weeds provide all the conditions they need to thrive: shade, cooler temperatures, food, and a place to hide. Scorpions, spiders, snakes, and rodents are are just a few of the pests that find safe harbor in weeds.

WHAT PESTS LURK IN WEEDS?

Any type of pest might be attracted to weeds, but Arizonans should be particularly concerned about the following:
  • Scorpions
  • Spiders
  • Ants
  • Rats

HOW DO WEEDS HARBOR PESTS?

Weeds provide harbor for pests in several essential ways:
  1. Food – weed seeds provide essential nutrition
  2. Water – water can be found on inside weed stems and leaves, or on top from rain and condensation
  3. Cover – lack of visibility provides protection from predators (According to the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, cotton rats construct little tunnels or runways in grasses and weeds where they can forage in safety.

HOW SHOULD I GET RID OF WEEDS?

Weeds start to go crazy around February and March if no pre-emergent spray has been used. Now is the time to deal with bugs and weeds!   Conquistador recommends pre-emergent treatment in the Spring and Fall, with spot treatments in Fall and Winter. The Conquer All Program includes weed control in addition to termites, scorpions, rats and regular pest control.

Conquistador Pest & Termite is offering one free pre-emergent treatment for new customers. Take advantage of this offer so you don’t unwittingly create a safe harbor for rodents and bugs.
