Do you have a Termite Infestation in Your Home?

Do you have a Termite Infestation in Your Home? What’s The Best Termite Treatment for Them?

Have you noticed strange little piles of what looks like sand on your wood steps? Or maybe in the corners of your house on the ground? This is termite poop. How about bubbling paint on your walls? Or piles of little tiny bug wings on the floor or window sill? Or the obvious, a swarm of flying termites? Or mud tubes on the outside of your home? These are all signs of a termite infestation. And what is the best termite treatment to get rid of these super destructive wood-chomping bugs? Let’s go over a few things first.

How Many Types of Termites are There?

There are 45 different species of termites in the US. The most common termite in Tucson is the Subterranean termite.

Why Didn’t I Notice the Termites Sooner?

The problem with termites is that it can take 4 years or more for many of these signs to be noticeable. In the meantime, those little buggers may have been eating their way through the wood in your house! Did you know they will even eat drywall? They will eat anything with cellulose, which drywall paper has. These destructive bugs are very secretive and hide deep in the wood creating their colonies. Until you find one or more of those signs listed above, you might never have known they were there.

How Did They Get In My House?

Subterranean termites have many ways they can get inside and start destroying your home. Here are a few ways that can happen.

  • Stacked firewood
  • Attic or foundation vents that have no screen or holes in the screen
  • An old piece of wood furniture
  • Cracks in your foundation
  • Walls with cracks
  • Wood-to-ground contact such as wood steps touching the dirt
  • Cracks around window and door frames
  • Under or through wood shingles

A friend of mine once bought a beautiful burl wood table at a garage sale, only to get it home and shortly thereafter discover termite poop coming from the bottom of it when it was moved. Ewww!
